Zero Motorcycles is making a bold move, shifting its sales strategy to a direct-to-consumer model and cutting out traditional dealerships. This pivot coincides with the launch of two new electric dirt bikes, the lightweight XE and the more powerful XB. The XE, weighing in at just 101kg (222 lbs), is purpose-built for trail riding — a segment where low weight is paramount for agility and performance.

This direct sales approach, while potentially alienating some dealers, could allow Zero to foster a closer relationship with its customers and offer more competitive pricing. The XE's sub-225-pound weight puts it in direct competition with the Sur-Ron Light Bee X, but with the backing of an established American manufacturer and a proper dealer network for service.

The success of this strategy will hinge on Zero's ability to provide a seamless online purchasing experience and robust customer support. The new XE and XB models will be the first to test this new sales channel, and the industry will be watching closely to see if this gamble pays off. It's a risky but potentially rewarding move that could reshape the electric motorcycle market.
