THE VERDICT

"The MX4 delivers class-leading suspension and a powerful motor at a price that makes the competition sweat."

WHAT WE LIKED

  • Class-leading suspension
  • Powerful and responsive motor
  • Excellent value for money

WHAT NEEDS WORK

  • Optimistic range claims
  • Minor build quality issues
  • Gearbox requires occasional maintenance

When the Talaria Sting R MX4 first landed in our workshop, the buzz was palpable. On paper, the 2025 model boasts a significant 10% peak power increase over its predecessor, a class-leading suspension, and a direct-drive gearbox that sets it apart from its belt-driven rivals. To see if the new MX4 lives up to the hype, we spent a solid month putting it through its paces, from the dusty, sun-baked hardpack of the Mojave Desert to the slick, root-strewn singletrack of the Sierra Nevada foothills after a late spring storm.

Our testing grounds were deliberately varied. We started with fast, flowing fire roads and whooped-out desert sections to test high-speed stability and power delivery. Then, we moved to tight, technical climbs and descents in the mountains, where agility, suspension compliance, and brake performance would be paramount.

Performance & Power

The heart of the new MX4 is its uprated motor, now pushing out a claimed 8kW at peak. The difference is immediately noticeable. Where the previous model was brisk, the 2025 version is aggressive. Power delivery is crisp and immediate, thanks to the gearbox drive, providing a connected feel that belt-driven bikes sometimes lack.

Range & Battery Life

With a 60V 45Ah battery, the MX4 offers a respectable, if not groundbreaking, range. Talaria claims around 50 miles in eco mode, which we found to be optimistic but not entirely unrealistic on flat, easy trails. During a hard-charging 2-hour session on a mixed motocross track and trail loop, we managed about 19 miles before the battery indicator started flashing red.

Suspension & Handling

This is where the Talaria Sting R MX4 truly shines and pulls away from the competition. The stock FastAce fork and shock are simply superb for a bike in this category. The suspension is plush and compliant on small bumps, yet it resists bottoming out on big hits and jumps. This allows you to charge through rough sections with a level of confidence that the pogo-stick-like suspension on the stock Sur-Ron simply can't match.

Brakes & Safety

Stopping power is provided by 4-piston hydraulic brakes clamping down on 220mm rotors. The brakes are strong and offer good modulation, allowing for precise control in all conditions. We experienced no brake fade, even on long, steep descents.

Who Is This For?

The Talaria Sting R MX4 is the bike for the rider who wants the best all-around package in the mid-range segment. It's equally at home on a motocross track as it is on a mountain trail. If you can only buy one electric dirt bike, this is the one to get.
